Most listeners will hear those words and think about the commencement of the 2024 Summer Olympics, in Paris, on Saturday. For us, Saturday marks the beginning of not a competition but of a ten-day trip to Liberia.
We aren’t world-class athletes but we have our eye on the prize. For us, the trip will be successful if we can achieve the following:
Connect: Country manager, Rev Francis Kollie, and seven case workers work diligently, under challenging and ever-changing circumstances. We want to listen to concerns and challenges, encourage and equip, and together, effectively plan for the next academic year and beyond.
Celebrate: We’ll host a half-day gathering to share a protein-rich meal with our sponsored students and their families. It’s all about these students so we are excited to celebrate their fortitude, hard work, and futures.
Empower: We’ve partnered with Days for Girls, a non-profit advancing menstrual equity and health. In addition to distributing 350 feminine hygiene kits, case workers will be trained to lead educational gatherings to bring understanding and dignity to girls and women.
Bridge: We’ll meet with several school administrators and if possible, with Liberia’s newly appointed Minister of Education, By sharing our vision and challenges, and understanding theirs, we hope to partner more effectively.
We’ll certainly report back. Until then, as you watch “the games” - think of us!
With gratitude,
Karen and Kreig
